The Bobath concept is a concept in neurological physical therapy that is based on neurophysiological findings. The Bobath concept is alternatively named “the living concept”-- ever since its conception it has been the subject of constant evolution and development. It is guided by the most advanced neurophysiological and bio-mechanical theories, and its philosophy involves a wide variety of treatment techniques. This concept is based on a positive approach to the patient, the integration of therapy into everyday life activities and active usage of patient's potential for regeneration and/or strengthening of the weaker body parts following injuries or disease states that affect the function of the neuromuscular system.

The Bobath concept is used to evaluate and treat individuals with a dysfunction in movement and/or muscular tone secondary to central nervous system dysfunction. 

The goal of the therapy is to optimize the function by improving the control mechanisms of the erect posture of the body and selective movement. The aim is to have patients re-learn or improve the performance of everyday activities in various circumstances (turning in bed, getting up, sitting down, walking, dressing, undressing, putting on shoes, eating, etc.) by focusing on the best possible quality and movement control while executing a function. In short, the individual is taught to function in everyday life environment where background disturbing factors are present that tend to block or worsen the functional motor component.
